Hernia Repair and Meshplasty

What is it?

Hernia is an abnormal protrusion of organs through normal openings in the body wall. The most common type of hernia is inguinal hernia.  Hernia may be internal or external. Femoral, umbilical, incisional, epigastric and hiatal hernia are other types of hernia. In initial stages hernia is reducible.  Surgery is indicated when hernia causes discomfort, pain and become non reducible. Surgery is also indicated even when no such complications are observed to avoid complications in future.

All the external hernias are diagnosed mostly by the physical examinations. Only some internal hernias are diagnosed by routine ultrasounds.

Surgery is only treatment for treating all the types of hernias. There is no conservative or any other alternative treatment. Your doctor decides which type of hernia repair you require depending upon the type of hernia and presence or absence of complications.

Different types of Hernia Repair Surgeries

Three types of hernia repair surgeries are performed for hernia repair:

Herniotomy
It is mostly performed for inguinal hernia in children. This operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 45 min. to 1 hour. Through small incision in inguinal region hernia sac is identified and contents of sac are replaced in abdominal cavity. The hernia sac is tied and excised. Child returns to his normal routine within a week after surgery.
Herniorrhaphy
It is a choice of surgery for inguinal hernia where the size of hernia is small and healthy muscle tissue is present around hernia opening. After opening the hernia through incision, contents of hernia are reduced and replaced back to their origin then herniorrhaphy is performed by sewing together the edges of healthy muscle tissue.
Hernioplasty
It is the choice of surgery for large complicated hernias where adjacent muscle tissue is weak. After correcting the defect of hernia opening it is strengthened by putting a mesh.
